August 2023 walk

August 2023 walk

The August walk from the Red Lion at Huncote was led by Allen.  Leaving the car park we turned left along Croft Hill Road and after crossing the bridge turned left onto the track leading to the Nature reserve.  We made a short stop to visit the pond then retraced our steps and continued to the left.  After a while we took the track on the left crossing the bridge over the river Soar.  Shortly we turned right over another bridge and followed the track along the side of the Quarry Works.  After crossing the bridge over the railway we went down the steps into the sports ground where we had a short break.  Crossing the field diagonally into the car park, we then turned left along Winston Avenue and after a short distance turned right down the waymarked path.  (That was after a large container was hoisted over the footpath).  We followed this path under the railway and over the river again and eventually reached Dovecote Road where we turned left.  After passing the Heathcote Arms we stopped for our break by St Michael and All Angels Church.  Continuing right along the main road we turned left into Marsden Road and at the end crossed the field up to Stanton Lane.  We crossed the road and went along the jitty into the field which led down to Potters Marston.  Here we had a short break to see St Mary's chapel which dates from the 15th century and apparently is still in use.  Back on track we turned left passing the farm buildings and the pond to continue over several fields following Thurmaston Brook until we reached Stoney Bridge. (On the way we were very close to a herd of cows and a rather large bull).  Turning left we soon reached the track on our right which opened into a large grassy field.  Crossing diagonally to reach a footbridge over the brook we entered the final field to reach Croft Hill Road.  Turning left it was a short distance back to the pub and an excellent lunch.
