Trespasses

Set in Ireland in1975, Trespasses tells the story of a 25 year old Catholic woman, Cushla.  She lives with her alcoholic mother, teaches in the local primary school and works part time in the family bar in a Garrison town, frequented by British soldiers.  She becomes infatuated with a married man, a Protestant barrister nearly twice her age.  Right from the start the relationship is one-sided, with Michael calling all the shots.  It's a reckless, doomed love affair.  Cushla befriends a young boy, 7 year old Davy McGeown, whose father is the victim of a particularly vicious attack by the paramilitaries.

The majority of the group were glad they had read it, though it couldn't really be classed as 'an enjoyable read'.

The story was at times depressing, sad and violent, but realistic with wonderful descriptions. The conflict during 'The Troubles' was accurately portrayed and it was easy to empathise with the situation that the characters found themselves in.  Some found Cushla's character annoying, but the more romantic in the group could identify with Cushla's obsession with Michael.

Overall the book was well worth reading.
