The People on Platform 5

In this book Clare Pooley explores the dynamics and developing relationships between a group of commuters travelling by train regularly in the same carriage from Hampton Court to London Waterloo. Based to an extent that people don't communicate with each other during such journeys.

The majority of the group enjoyed this novel and would categorise it as light/holiday reading. Although one member described it as rather silly and unrealistic in parts, others had loved it.

Funny and witty at times there were distinct changes in tone when it became much darker and more serious. Teenage bullying/ social media activity and manipulative/coercive control providing counterpoints to the lightness of the read and a very contemporary feel.

There were varied responses to the pace of this novel, some finding the beginning very slow, with interest increasing as it progressed. On a second reading there was found to be more depth by one or two.

The structure served to build the strength of the characters. They could have been just caricatures but this wasn't so. Characters depicted well. Very easy to visualise them, as Pooley cleverly brought them together in terms of plot. Iona at fifty-seven, larger than life, in her flamboyant clothing, with her appendage Lulu, could almost be seen as a fairy godmother as she interacted with the others, bringing them together. The Piers/Martha interaction and support was heart-warming. It fused his love of numbers and the fall out her being bullied. All the characters were liked except Toby. With his exception, it was easy to empathise and sympathise with them.

The structure was also deemed to be successful as we learned of the characters' backgrounds and current circumstances in their own short chapters. In terms of a dramatic device, the incident with the grape had very important consequences.

In just describing a regular train journey something extraordinary was required to move things on.

Much discussion ensued. One member of the group knew this part of the line/journey very well so it was interesting to gain her perspective. It further made us realise that people shouldn't make assumptions about others without background knowledge.

The camaraderie and warmth between the characters were so good at the close as we enjoyed the happy ending despite what difficulties had gone before. Although a light read it was thought provoking and we would be happy to recommend it as a "feel good" experience. It was very satisfying to witness change in individuals leading to greater awareness and happiness.
