Any Book by Denzil Meyrick

Any Book by Denzil Meyrick

Most of the group read the first book-Whisky from Small Glasses-where we are introduced to DCI Jim Daley and DS Brian Scott. Daley is sent from Glasgow to Kinloch, a small fishing village on the west coast of Scotland,  to solve a particularly brutal murder. Other books read were Murder at Holly House, set in Yorkshire, and One Last Round Before Midnight, a series of short stories.

Opinions about Denzil Meyrick varied widely. Some, who enjoyed detective novels, thought that there were other more talented writers of that genre. Others enjoyed the book and have gone on to read the next books in the series. A few said that they weren't a fan of detective novels.

Some were irritated by the Scottish accent in Whisky from Small Glasses, others enjoyed it!

Many members said that the violence in Whisky from Small Glasses didn't need to be so graphic, and though the characters were well drawn they didn't like any of them! There seemed to far too much corruption in the police force.

The setting of the book was well described.

Some members predicted a lot of the book, others thought that the writing was a little dated and written by a man for men.

Others commented that though the plot was developed well, the ending came suddenly and was obviously a lead in to the next DCI Daley novel.

Murder at Holly House was a Christmas novel, containing playful humour and good characterisation. The fictitious Yorkshire village was beautifully described, but like Whisky from Small Glasses, the ending could be guessed before the end of the stories.
